Robust determination of optical path difference: fringe tracking at the infrared optical telescope array interferometer.

چکیده
We describe the fringe-packet tracking system used to equalize the optical path lengths at the Infrared Optical Telescope Array interferometer. The measurement of closure phases requires obtaining fringes on three baselines simultaneously. This is accomplished by use of an algorithm based on double Fourier interferometry for obtaining the wavelength-dependent phase of the fringes and a group-delay tracking algorithm for determining the position of the fringe packet. A comparison of data acquired with and without the fringe-packet tracker shows a factor of approximately 3 reduction of the error in the closure-phase measurement. The fringe-packet tracker has been able so far to track fringes with signal-to-noise ratios as low as 1.8 for stars as faint as mH = 7.0.

Perspective of long baseline optical interferometry
This article is a sort of sequel of the earlier extensive review by Saha (1999a) where emphasis was laid down on the ground based single aperture, as well as on the working long baseline optical interferometers (LBI) situated at the various observatories across the globe that are producing a large amount of astronomical results. Since the future of high resolution astronomy lies with the new ge...
متن کاملAdaptive DFT-Based Interferometer Fringe Tracking
An automatic interferometer fringe tracking system has been developed, implemented, and tested at the Infrared Optical Telescope Array (IOTA) observatory at Mt. Hopkins, Arizona. The system can minimize the optical path differences (OPDs) for all three baselines of the Michelson stellar interferometer at IOTA. Based on sliding window discrete Fourier transform (DFT) calculations that were optim...
متن کاملSimultaneous Water Vapor and Dry Air Optical Path Length Measurements and Compensation with the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer
The Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer uses a near-infrared camera to measure the optical path length variations between the two AO-corrected apertures and provide high-angular resolution observations for all its science channels (1.5-13 μm). There is however a wavelength dependent component to the atmospheric turbulence, which can introduce optical path length errors when observing at a ...
متن کاملA New Design For a Fringe-Tracking Interferometric Array
A conceptual design for a fringe-tracking interferometric array is presented. Unlike the conventional design which splits N beams of an N aperture array and combines them into N(N 1)/2 fringes, only N broad-band fringes are formed and measured in the fringe-tracking channel to determine N 1 instantaneous piston di erences. Beam splitting and combining are accomplished by optics composed of a co...

In this paper a method for digitally recording four quarter-reference-wave-holograms (by CCD) in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer setup, and reconstructing the object wave-front by numerical method is presented. The terms of direct transmission, auto-correlation and conjugate wave in the four wave reconstruction are cancelled out and only one original object wave is left after overlapping. Reconst...
